Help Guide

The Windows 98 Companion CD should be very easy to use, but here is a guide to its operation. It is designed in HTML, so all links will appear as underlined text that you can click on to go to that topic, and can be viewed in a Web browser or using the compiled version for those people who do not have a browser. Some images or parts of images may also be links that can be clicked on. The rule of thumb is that if, when you move the mouse pointer over something, the pointer changes (normally to a hand) then it's a link you can click on. A brief guide to the sections that are indexed down the left side by the icon links can be found in the introduction. See also Icon Legend

There is however one proviso. Netscape Navigator cannot open files in place. Instead of executing a file, it simply copies or downloads it. This makes it unsuitable for use with the PC Plus SuperCDs because they contain many links to software. Indeed on this SuperCD you will find links to both programs and ScreenCam movies. In order to use these, you need to either have Internet Explorer 3 or 4 (or Win98!) running or use the compiled version, called pcplus.exe in the root directory of the CD.

It needs to use this option If you use the compiled version, when you click on a link, the program will be started immediately. If you are running Internet Explorer then you will have to reply to two dialog boxes. The first box will ask you if you want to Save the file to disk (the default option) or Open the File/Run the file from its current location. Both of these last two amount to the same thing but are described differently in IE3 and IE4. You must change the option to Open/Execute/Run the file. If you do not do this, not only will you fill your hard drive up with unnecessary files, but they will not work correctly if you execute them from your hard drive instead of from the SuperCD, because only the single file will have been copied and not any additional files that the program may need. In this case you will get a failure that informs you that it cannot find the specified files.
It needs to use this option In the next dialog, you will probably get a warning that the file has not been digitally signed. This is a standard warning used for the Internet to warn you about files that have not been signed with the Authenticode security system. All our SuperCDs are thoroughly checked for viruses and authenticated by the UK Virus Certification Centre at the University of Bradford (though please read the standard Disclaimer agreement at the beginning of this CD), so this message is normal, and nothing to worry about. To use the file you must click on Yes to open the file.

The file will then be executed directly from the SuperCD and the program will either run or start the Setup as appropriate.

Icon Legend

Where you see this icon, it means that the accompanying text refers to a brand new feature in Windows 98, not one that has been included in previous versions of Windows. It may be a visible enhancement or a hidden improvement, but it is available for the first time in Windows 98.
Since much of the visible enhancement to the OS is supplied by Internet Explorer 4, we have included this icon which signifies that while the feature was not a part of the standard Windows 95 OS, it is available by installing Internet Explorer 4.01 on a Windows 95 machine.
update.gif (1449 bytes) This icon signifies a part of the Windows 98 Companion that has been updated since its initial release last month. As the final release of Windows 98 became available relevant areas, or areas that has caused problems in beta releases, have been added to this guide to ensure it is as up-to-date as possible.
This icon signifies that there is a ScreenCam movie that explains or shows the feature in question. These ScreenCams require Windows 95/98 to run and a resolution of 800x600 with 256 colours (16-bit colour preferred).
This icon signifies that the piece of software referred to is actually available for installation from this SuperCD. Simply click on the icon to run the setup program (if you are browsing with IE3 or 4, you must follow the SuperCD instructions for running files. System requirements for the program will be displayed by this icon.
